There are a lot of misconceptions about coca because of the stigma created by the cocaine wars in Latin America and the Caribbean. I wrote this piece to challenge the mainstream narrative about coca and remind everyone that coca is sacred in my communities and we used it in medicine and ceremonies. This piece was published on Daughters of Madre Earth.

Steven Universe – My Thoughts on the Show and Battle of Heart and Mind

*Warning this review contains spoilers*
The season 5 finale was the conclusion for the entire series as far as I’m concerned.
Despite the fact that both season 6 and a movie have been confirmed, the entire hour special felt like a disappointing conclusion to the complex themes Steven Universe has built up over the years. Continue reading “Steven Universe – My Thoughts on the Show and Battle of Heart and Mind”
BANANA FISH – A Bittersweet Experience
*Warning this review contains spoilers*
The animated version of Banana Fish ended in late December of 2018 and I still feel exhausted. I had a lot of hope that the anime would address the problematic aspects of the series and make much-needed updates to amend those issues, but ultimately for the better or worse the anime left a bitter taste in my mouth. Banana Fish and the Real-World Racial Politics of 1980’s America [AnimeFeminist]

This article was published on November 7, 2018, on AnimeFeminist. Banana Fish was probably the most emotionally exhausting series I have ever read. Despite many painful moments, I was impressed by the immense research Akimi Yoshida did for the series and how she was able to depict how pervasive white supremacy is throughout all sectors of society. However, those historical events depicted in the series can be painful for new QTBIPOC (Queer, Trans, Black, Indigenous, People of Color) readers. Please read the original article on AnimeFeminist.
13 Bolivian Heroines That Should Have Been In Your World History Books But Weren’t [FierceMitu]
This list was a passion project for me. It took a few months to research every amazing Queer and Trans BIPOC on this list and while the research often led me to tears, I am grateful and humbled to have studied the lives of these amazing Queer and Trans BIPOC. While I will often be the first to denounce borders, it is so rare for our past and present leaders in Bolivia to be celebrated on a global scale. This list is for them. I love them, please celebrate them with me. My followers can read this passion list on FierceMitu.
